Anthropic’s Private Valuation Transforms Early Backers into Billion-Dollar Holders

At the current $965 billion private valuation, major investors in the AI lab see their stakes worth billions, with some early bets yielding returns exceeding ninetyfold.

Anthropic’s upcoming public listing, anticipated for later this year, stands to generate significant wealth for its investors, with the company expected to be valued at up to $2 trillion. However, even at the firm’s most recent private market valuation of $965 billion, the stakes held by key venture capital firms and early backers already represent multi-billion dollar assets.

The disparity in entry points has created distinct tiers of returns for the company’s shareholders. While later-stage investors joined at valuations in the hundreds of billions, early participants secured their positions when the startup was worth a fraction of that sum. According to data from Bloomberg, these historical investment timings have resulted in substantial paper gains for several prominent figures and firms.

Eric Schmidt, the former chief executive officer of Google, exemplifies the potential of early-stage entry. He participated in Anthropic’s Series A round in 2021, a period when PitchBook data indicates the startup was valued at $461 million. Schmidt currently holds approximately 1% of the company. At the current private valuation, this minority stake is worth nearly $10 billion, a figure that underscores the exponential growth of the AI sector over the past half-decade.

Iconiq, an investment firm that entered the market much later, also holds a significant position. Last year, the company committed $6 billion to Anthropic when the valuation had already reached $183 billion. This late-stage investment is currently valued at $17 billion. Analysts suggest that if the IPO proceeds as expected, this position could potentially double in value, though it lacks the multiplier effect seen in earlier rounds.

Menlo Ventures, which led the company’s Series D financing, has invested over $1 billion in Anthropic over time. This cumulative investment now translates to a stake valued at $14 billion. The firm’s role as a lead investor in a major funding round has solidified its position as a primary holder of equity in the AI laboratory.

Sequoia, a renowned venture capital firm, first backed Anthropic earlier this year, entering at a valuation of $380 billion. The $3 billion investment secured roughly 1% ownership for the firm. Although this entry point is considerably higher than that of 2021 investors, Sequoia has already more than doubled its initial investment based on the current private market price.

Sound Ventures, launched by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, has also seen its portfolio value surge. The firm invested $35 million in the 2023 Series C round and subsequently added $400 million to the company. This combined investment has resulted in a stake worth billions today. It is noted that Kutcher departed Sound Ventures earlier this year to establish a new venture capital firm.

Spark Capital holds the distinction of being the only known venture capital firm with a board seat at Anthropic. The firm invested $75 million in the same 2023 Series C round, when the company was valued at $5 billion. That initial position has ballooned more than ninetyfold, reaching a current value of $7 billion. This dramatic appreciation highlights the extreme upside potential for investors who held through the company’s rapid scaling.

As the IPO approaches, these figures will likely be reassessed against the final public listing price. While the $965 billion valuation provides a current snapshot, the anticipated $2 trillion target suggests that all listed backers stand to see further appreciation. The varying entry prices demonstrate how the timing of investment in high-growth AI firms can dictate the magnitude of financial returns.
